Curtin&Co’s founder and chief executive, Tom Curtin, is the author of two leading texts in their fields.
Managing Green Issues (Palgrave Macmillan, 2000 and 2007) is in its second edition and is used as a text on issues management. It gives practical advice and includes numerous case histories, demonstrating how to deal with controversial projects from house-building to transport infrastructure to nuclear power.
Managing A Crisis (Macmillan, 2005) gives a detailed look at crises and includes practical advice as to how to prepare for and cope with any if they should arise.
Chapters include:
What makes a green issue?
Identifying and segmenting stakeholders
The power pyramid – how the political hierarchy works
The importance of third party advocacy
Public consultation
Managing the media
Establishing environmental credentials
“This book is an absolute must for anyone who wants to engage in a sensible dialogue with communities and their representatives...If developers want real results in a timely fashion then this book, and its chapters on consultation, are essential reading.” - Martin Leyland, Managing Director, Barratt Developments Limited.
“Intriguing and thought-provoking. Should be read by those involved in green issues from whatever standpoint.” - Anthony O’Hear, Professor of Philosophy, University of Bradford.
“[Managing Green Issues] introduces us to a clear strategy and some fascinating tactics which, if adopted, may well result in even apparently contentious and potentially very unpopular developments being accepted with good grace.” - Admiral Sir Julian Oswald.
Written with assistance from Naomi Husein and Daniel Hayman, chapters include:
What makes a crisis?
Predicting a crisis
Managing stakeholders: media, politicians, activists, customers, etc.
Design of crisis communication procedures

“In 40 years of newspaper and radio journalism, I haven’t seen a better practical guide on how to deal with the media when in a crisis. This should be a standard reference book for boardrooms everywhere.” - Bud Evans, former editor of Today, BBC Radio 4.
